Sunday 26th April 2009

From Keith:

Nice day for a bike ride, mostly bright and sunny with a fresh south
easterly to keep us cool.
Eight of us left North Cheam via Walton, Betchworth & Newdigate to Rusper
golf Club where several others joined us for elevenses.
The original lunch stop at Chiddingfold was considered a bit too far, so
alternative of Little Park Hatch at Cranleigh was the target. Lunch stop
was extended due to an unexpectedly long wait for food. However we still
reached Capel in good time for their usual excellent tea and cakes.
Total about 70 miles.

Restoration work nearing completion on the Wey & Arun Canal at Loxwood

C&M with the West Kent CTC Hardriders at the Onslow Arms, Loxwood

Sunday 19th April 2009

Some may remember last years' attempt to rendezvous with the WKCTCHR.It was snowed off, with most remaining indoors, exception being Jake, and of course the WKCTCHR who made snowmen at Henfold and took pictures.
So with sunshine but a chilly wind,Roy took us to Loxwood via Okewood hill church leaving the majority at Henfold.
They numbered 3....Martin from Sevenoaks,Roy from Edenbridge and Simon from Bromley. We were Jeff,Keith,Paul,Graham,Ed,John G and myself.
The pace was brisk but with Roy in unfamiliar territory, stops were frequent.Their synopsis on rides includes"impromptu rough stuff" and so naturally, the Wey and Arun Canal and Downs Link featured on the return.
Tea was Tanhurst.

An enjoyable day..........to be repeated in the Autumn.........you have been warned.......lol.

Congratulations John Scott and Olivia

John, the way Picasa works it brings up pictures first, so before I congratulate you on your family wedding, these are some of mine. We missed you lately especially on the Easter Tour where I had a mishap but not before taking photo of happy Ian and the ever happy Pam.
As is my normal want, always looking at the bar maids, she invited me round the other side of the bar for photo shoot. The reason being to explain the meaning of the word above our heads. There will be a reward for the first correct answer as a comment to this blog. Keith can't participate as he asked the question and I got the answer. A number of you know it if you can remember!
Millie and mum Sunday 19 April, one week after my hip op. Millie will be 1yr on 24 Apr. and already getting used to the idea of work.

So John wait until you are a grandfather, its so exiting. My hearty congratulations on the marriage of Olivia to Robin, he is a handsome man and your daughter is very beautiful. Glad to see she is maintaining your family seat. My daughter Vanessa was going to do the same (Morley-Atkins) but in the end settled for Atkins. Probably some concern from down under!!
It was a pleasure to sit through the slide show over a cup of tea. What a splendid job it was. I'm glad John you looked so happy and was able to give your daughter and son in law a good send of. Its something they will remember for ever. As for me I wanted to give mine a deposit on a house but in the end gave in.
The photo I like most John when you sat in the back of the Rolls with Olivia and your splendid wedding suit. You reminded me of Alan Sugar as if you were about to say! "Your Fired"
Finally I am glad that Olivia married a Deaville and not the name of the photographer!!

As for me, it might be 6 to 12 weeks before I am on my bike (that's the DR. prognosis not mine-we will see) so your are welcome to call round to my pad in Walton on the Hill, whenever. Just text or phone 07802234836 B4hand

Welcome to New Member "Holly"

What a lucky chap I am! First Tim agreed to take me to 11's, second it was so good to be out in the fresh air and sunshine again after Bristol Royal Infirmary. Met lots of older (least young) friends and fellow cyclists plus one new one. Holly it was great to meet you, yet another incentive for me to get better soon and join the C&M Sunday rides. For my epic effort today I got Nil Puoi (or however you spell points in French!)

The Fractured Femur

If you are squeemish girls look away now. This is what arrived home on Friday night causing Barbara to run like hell and abandon me! Can you blame her? Probably at least 6 weeks before I am riding again (could be 12 weeks) If anyone knows of anyone with my condition "nof" Neck of Fema fracture I would be interested to cntact them or they me! Mike M.

Easter Tour Bristol

The beggining of the tour for Mike M, the Horse Shoe Falls on the Avon at Bath as I had joined the large party riding down on Thursday and Friday for late lunch at Bathampton. The pub and the grub were good.
Overtaking 3 fast ladies some I may now regret ( was I showing off !, I was going quick like a bat out of hell, some 24hrs before my coming together with a hard railway line)
Joe was going like a train also.
Pam was in fine fettle and I am so glad was no where near me when I fell!!

I will post a few more photo's but will not bore you with them all tonight especialy as Pete has already done a splendid Job. Look our for the gory result of the accident and the odd photo of C&M @ Henfold today.

Easter 2009 - Bristol

Saturday cool and sunny all day. Steve led us on a cycle route to Chepstow for lunch at the Coach and Horses. Taking in the Severn Bridge both ways and the viewpoint by the service area. A very twisty and complex cycle route found us crossing the Avon along side the M5. Then along the banks of the river Avon into the gorge under the suspension bridge and on to Bristol Docks on up to our accommodation near Bristol Zoo at Durdhan Down.

Sunday - yet another sunny, cloudless, warmer day starting with a leisurely tour of Bristol Docks including coffee and an extended view of the steam train (Henbury) abruptly halted by Mike Morley falling at 1mph and breaking his leg. Followed by numerous joke pictures of the ambulance crew, etc. and his departure for hospital. Lunch at Long Ashton followed by a hilly cycle route round Bristol Airport back to the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Monday - after an early breakfast, the longer ride moved off late (heavy night before), the remainder followed the Bristol/Bath cycle route for 11s. The pub at Bathampton being very busy we had a lovely lunch from a long boat/cafe. Ices were taken at the Mad Hatter by the aqueduct which stretched into tea - and cake complements of Ian. We finally split at Steventon most continuing on the canal to Devizes, the rest to Corsham.

Many thanks to Steve and Ann for a very pleasant Easter.

Pete

P.S.

The latest on Mike seems to be 7-10 days in hospital and he needs a second op to tighten one of the three screws inserted in the top of his right leg.

Mike Morley

After a misunderstanding with some railway tracks running along the road at Bristol Docks, Mike is currently in Bristol Royal Infirmary sporting some additional metalwork holding his right femur together.

The paramedic and ambulance crew scooping Mike up in a gurney to go to the hospital.

April 10 2009 I Must Go Down To The Seas Again

With most away on the Easter tour, it was time to collect two points by sampling another of Simon's ride. This time it was to Southend, unvisited for over 40 years so a second visit was long over. Despite two no-shows, there were still 58 at Hyde Park Cormer including a large number of YACF regulars. As with most night rides, there wasn't much of a view nor I can tell you much about the ride itself being a TEC for half of it. I recall the route took in Embankment, The Blind Beggar in Whitechapel, Stratford (views of the nearby Olympic Stadium) before veering southeast in Ilford through Dagenham to Lakeside for a 0300 breakfast for those who fancied and could afford it. We hit countryside (or at least unlit roads) for the first time between Chadwell St Mary and Mucking. By Essex's standards, there was next a hilly section through Stanford-Le-Hope and Thundersley (Bread and Cheese Hill). Turning off the A13 in Leigh-On-Sea we stopped to admire the sunrise over Canvey Island before descending to sea level in Southend for breakfast at the Rose Cafe beside the pier. The ride collected 2 punctures and one broken chain. I clocked up 75+ miles door to door and was home before 1030.

Lisa, Thanks for the invite which I have accepted lets hope it works again now. Mike M.

Sunday April 5th 2009

This was a fine spring day though only the brave sported shorts. Six (including the rarely seen this far west Mike F) became eight by the time we reached Long Ditton. We threaded a usual course through Hersham, Walton, Weybridge and Addlestone to reach crowded Fairoaks Airport where our numbers had soared to twenty plus the Scottish rider. So a long thin line of riders stretched down Philpot Lane into Horsell and onto the Basingstoke in Woking. At St Johns we paused before the A324 to regroup. I'd stopped in the exact same spot on the recce but for the life of me I couldn't remember the continuation. Once again the mist lifted about 200 yards further on - we should have crossed to the opposite bank! Only pride plunged us into Woking's western suburbs where a local builder got us back on course.

Fox Corner led on past the Merial plant where still there's no blue plaque "F&M born here July 2007". Along the A324 greetings were exchanged with the homeward Hounslow. A left into Cobbett Hill Road soon delivered us beside Wood Street's green; BYOs headed for the benches, the rest settled for surprisingly the White Hart's garden. This has gone even more upmarket - few punters but loos worth a visit! Whilst Terry fixed a puncture, Anne arrived without maps after a morning spent running. The shortest route home took us past Guildford's old barracks, along the Wey Navigation (where Vic lurked in the bushes) and beside the A3 to tea at Ockham Bites. A breakaway group headed to Wisley Airfield for Cobham Bus Museum's Open Day whilst the lazy contented themselves with the passing Routemasters. My journey home included an Asiatic festival at Boldermere and divers buses well off route. And so another ride was over - around 55 miles door to door.

Chiddingstone

Rides Sec Andy proudly displaying his "new", vintage Coventry Eagle, fresh from eBay

Sunday 29th March 2009

From Mike:

A few hours into the change to summer time and four of us – Jeff, Keith, Norman and Mike – set off for Oxted after a somewhat nippy ride to North Cheam. After collecting Pete B at the Midday Sun pub, Woodmansterne, Farthing Downs seemed to promise a fine spring day. Through Bletchingly, and some thought we might be going for a jaunt along the M25 but instead we chose the cycle path alongside the A25 for the short stretch to Oxted. Mike punctured, a little sharp stone in the front tyre, along the road to the station. At Morrisons we met Andy and Bob and were soon joined by Steve.

Setting off for Chiddingstone, a chill in the air, not to mention gathering nimbostratus, proved that the weather was not up to expectations. No matter, pretty Merle Common and the little roads round Haxted, and no hills, sped us on our way. Through Edenbridge into fine countryside round Hever and before too long we were cycling alongside the castle moat. The Landlord at the Castle Inn is clearly a motor-racing fan; on a previous visit the Spanish Grand Prix was on the TV, this time it was not long before the TV was switched on for the Australian race, the first of the season which had of course already taken place earlier that morning. After a leisurely spell at the pub – there is an extra hour of daylight now – we set off for Woldingham and, of course, hills up past Chartwell and then from Westerham to Botley Hill. From there it was downhill all the way to a warm welcome at the pleasant garden centre.
